How to use a teleprompter without sounding like you are reading it
We put executives and founders in front of a camera every week, and the ones who look natural are not better readers. The giveaway is almost never the prompter itself. It is where your eyes go and how the words were written, and three things fix most of it. Before any of them, time the script before you load it, so you are not discovering it runs 90 seconds on take four.
Put the text near the lens. On a phone that means the script sits in the top third of the screen, just under the front camera, not down in the middle where your eyes have to drop. It is why the reading line in this tool sits at about thirty percent of the screen height instead of halfway down.
Write shorter lines. Past about seven words your eyes have to travel across the screen, and everyone watching can see it happen. Turn phone frame mode on and the column narrows for you, which forces the line breaks in the right places.
Slow the scroll until you are slightly ahead of it. Chase the text and you sound rushed. Wait for it and you sound flat. The sweet spot is reading about a beat ahead and letting the words catch up to you.
One more thing that has nothing to do with the tool. Read the script out loud twice before you film. By the time the camera is on you are not really reading any more, you are remembering, and the prompter is only there to keep you on track.
Using a teleprompter for TikTok, Reels and Shorts
- Run a rehearsal take with phone frame mode on. It shows the script inside a 9:16 column so you can see how much of the frame the words take up and where your eyes end up landing. Remember that the platform draws its own interface over your frame while you film, so anything you care about wants to sit clear of the bottom third.
- Set your phone at eye height. Reading down at a phone flat on the desk gives you the double chin angle and the eyes down look in the same take.
- Watch the first three seconds back with the sound off. If your eyes track left to right, drop the text size or break the lines up.
- Say your hook without the prompter. Openers land better when you are talking straight down the lens rather than reading. Start the scroll once the hook is out, and if the opening line still feels flat when you read it aloud, rewrite it instead of trying to perform your way out of it.
- Keep takes short. Two minutes of scrolling script is a lot of pressure to hold. Break it into blocks and film them separately.
- Rehearse as often as you like. A free online teleprompter has no take limit, and there is nothing to save or export between runs.
Why we built this
We run a done for you short form video service. Most of the people we film are executives, founders and professionals who are sharp in a meeting and go stiff the second a camera points at them. A prompter fixes about half of that. The other half is how the script was written, which is a different job. That is also why we built this for executives rather than creators: the problem is rarely confidence, it is having the words ready.
Every prompter we tried before this wanted a signup, a subscription, or stamped something on the output. So we built the version we wanted clients using the night before a shoot: open a page, paste the script, press start. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for, and it works on the phone already in their hand.
What is a teleprompter?
A teleprompter is a screen that scrolls your script at a set pace next to or in front of the lens, so you can read while still appearing to look at the camera. Broadcast studios have used them since the 1950s, which is where the word comes from. Two kinds exist. A beam splitter rig puts a sheet of angled glass in front of the lens: the camera shoots straight through it while you read the words reflected off the front, which is why that kind needs the text mirrored. An on-screen prompter, like this page, simply scrolls the script on a phone, tablet or monitor sitting as close to the lens as you can get it. Same job, no glass, and for a phone filmed at arm's length it is usually enough.
What this teleprompter does not do yet
This is version one and it handles the reading only. It does not lay the script over your camera preview and it does not record. If you want the words sitting on top of the lens, film on your phone and read from a second screen, or use phone frame mode to rehearse and then film the take normally.
What it does do is stay private. The script is handled entirely inside your browser. There is no account, no upload and no server call, so there is nothing for us to see even if we wanted to. We keep one copy in your browser local storage so your script survives closing the tab, and clearing your browsing data removes it.

Is this online teleprompter really free?
Yes. It is a free teleprompter with no signup, no account and no limit on how long your script can be. There is nothing to export and nothing to watermark, because you are reading off your own screen.
Do I need to download a teleprompter app?
No. This is a free online teleprompter with no download. It runs in your browser on desktop and mobile, and once the page has loaded it keeps working even if your connection drops.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. Open the page in Safari or Chrome on your phone, paste your script and press start. Most Android browsers go properly fullscreen. On iPhone the reading view fills the screen but Safari keeps its own bars visible, so turn the phone to landscape if you want more room.
Does it work with a beam splitter teleprompter rig?
Yes. Switch mirror mode on before you start and it runs as a mirror teleprompter, which is exactly what a beam splitter rig needs. Put the phone or tablet in the cradle, push the text size up so you can read it at your filming distance, and the glass flips it back the right way round.
Is my script uploaded anywhere?
No. Your script never leaves your device. There is no account, no upload and no server call. A copy is kept in your browser local storage so it is still there when you come back, and clearing your browsing data or emptying the box removes it.
Can I use it as a teleprompter for TikTok videos?
Yes, and phone frame mode is built for it. It narrows the script into a 9:16 column so your lines stay short and you can see how a vertical frame will feel before you film. Short lines matter more on TikTok, Reels and Shorts than anywhere else, because eye movement is obvious on a phone sized face.
How is this different from a paid teleprompter app?
Most paid apps record video with the script laid over the camera preview. This one does not record. It is a teleprompter app alternative for the reading part: speed, text size, mirror mode, a countdown and a reading line, then you film with whatever camera you already use. For a lot of people that is enough.
Does the iPhone have a built-in teleprompter?
No. There is no teleprompter in iOS itself, and no hidden setting in the Camera app. What people usually mean by it is one of two things: the Notes app scrolled with a thumb, which works until you need both hands, or a teleprompter app from the App Store. A browser prompter like this one is the third option, and it is the only one with nothing to install.
Is the CapCut teleprompter free?
It is free to use inside the CapCut app as things stand, though CapCut has moved features between free and paid before, so check it in the app rather than taking my word for it. It also does a different job. CapCut lays the script over its own camera and records the take, while this tool handles the reading only and leaves you to film with whatever camera you prefer.
What is the best free teleprompter app for iPhone?
It depends on whether you need it to record. If you want the script over the camera and the finished clip in one place, look at the App Store teleprompter apps with free tiers, BIGVU and PromptSmart being the two that come up most often. If you film on a separate camera, or read from a second phone, a browser prompter is less to set up: open this page in Safari, paste the script, press start. No app is going to fix a script that was written for the page rather than the mouth, which is the part that actually decides how you sound.
